The Chong Mek (Thai) and Vangtao (laos) border crossing is the southern most border crossing between the nations of Thailand and Laos. Just past the Laos visa office is a market area. Adjacent to this market area is an informal bus station. I say informal as the station has no official recognition (though the Loas immigration officers will direct you down the road to this station).

The station consists of a paved area, with a covered, small waiting area, and any number of somewhat battered mini-vans piloted by freelance entrepreneurs. The first mini-vans depart around 8am and continue trough to the evening when the border closes. These vans will take you to the city of Pakse (35 kilometres east) or drop you off anywhere in between. The fee is somewhat negoitable, but 100 baht (Thai currency) or 30,000 Kip (Laos currency) is fine (about us$3). There is no timetable. The vans will depart when they are full or thereabouts. The drop off point can be the city bus station or the central market. From here one can walk (a small city) or hire a tuktuk to one's final destination.

While dealing can be sharp there is no danger. I have found the drivers helpful and knowledgeable of the region.
