This Little Free Library is at the entrance into the N. K. Winston Elementary School's main administration office. This little library unit is one of a few specially placed community free book exchanges where the sponsor of the book unit collaborates with National Public Radio's (NPR) local San Antonio station KLRN lto honor the local communities military war heroes. On the outside of the little library units are names, photos and the story of the bravery in combat the honored military person did. A QR code is provided on the display so that those with a QR code reader on their cell phones can listen to the audio of the KLRN airing of this military heroe's deeds. Of course, the book exchange unit will also be used as the mini free library for picking out a free book to read or as a depository for new books to be added into the selection of books offered. This free book exchange box may have started out as an honor to war heroes from this community; but over time, the community has allowed this library unit to be so abused it is a disgrace to its original intent as a free book exchange and as a veteran memorial. The door is torn off and no books are available (small wonder), the the US flag that was on the back of the box has been poorly painted over. The only good thing left are the side panels where the the story of the veteran has been spared.
The concept of the Little Free Library is for people within a community to stop by the unit and examine the selection of books at that time. If you see a book you'd like to read, feel free to take it out and take it with you. If you have books at home that you have already read, you are encouraged to take these books to a Little Free Library and donate them into any little library's book selection. This concept is summarized as: Take A Book: Return a Book. Feel free to take a book you want to read, and feel free to return a book/add a book to this exchange unit or any others you know of. Your contribution of books keeps the sections varied and keeps the little libraries filled with book for others. Its is a win-win situation.
