Bob Dole's childhood home is at the corner of Maple and W. 11th St. It's a brick structure, with white trim on windows and attic. Next to the sidewalk, in the grassy area and highly visible to passersby, is a stone monument with the words: Dole/1035 N. Maple. A small pot of flowers rests in front of this marker.
Nearby is Russell High School, where Bob graduated from in 1941. He served in the Army during World War II, then began a lengthy career as a lawyer and politician. President Ford chose Dole as his running mate in the 1976 election, which was won by Jimmy Carter. Dole won the Republican nomination in 1996, and lost to Bill Clinton.
