Marker Text: In honor of Captain William L. Murphy, 39th Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, killed in action at Tanauan, Philippine Islands, August 14, 1900.
Battery Murphy was completed in 1900. It contained two (6 inch) disappearing -- type guns. Little activity occurred at Fort Columbia following World War I. During World War II, the guns at Battery Murphy sat ready for the enemy that never came. After the war, the guns were scrapped by the Army.
