The castle was one of England's earliest Norman fortresses and was built by Henry II in 1176.
The castle has dominated the village since then and became famouse as the castle named in the novel Peveril of the Peak written by Sir Walter Scott in 1823. It is now is a major tourist attraction for the village, maintained by English Heritage.
Although the castle can be visited it is slightly ironic that the tower itself shown on the pub sign is currently not accessible due to maintenance works being carried out by English Heritage.
