NRHP Nomination Form

"St. Ignatius Academy is perhaps the major surviving example of the Second Empire style in Fort Worth. Begun in 1888, the Academy is located at the southern part of the triangular property.

Of limestone block construction, the Academy is three stories high with basement. Opposite sides of the square building are roughly symmetrical. The east and west entrance fronts are seven bays wide, and each features a projecting center tower. The one-over-one windows used throughout the building have segmental arches on the main floor, flat arches on the second floor, and round heads with hood molds on the mansarded third floor. The east tower has a shallow hipped roof and is surmounted by a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, while the west tower has a statue of St. Ignatius. A belvedere with pilasters and peaked roof rises out of the center of the building.

The interior, originally consisting of classrooms and dormitories, was renovated in 1970 as Sunday School classrooms, but historic door and window architraves, the main staircase, and the basic configuration of the rooms still remain. Porches and balconies added over the years, were removed at the time of the renovation, restoring the structure to its historic configuration."
