The students of Longfellow Elementary have been the Longfellow Lions as long as anyone at the school can remember.
Speaking with the principal I found out that students and the Parent Teacher Organization raised funds for a new playground. After the new equipment was installed a decision was made to have students decorate a fiberglass lion that would be located next to the playground.
The first summer the lion was at the school it was unbolted from it's stand and taken. Students threw themselves into fund raising (I heard about more then one lemonade stand raising money that summer) to replace the lion.
It was decided that the new lion would be a concrete statue and was purchased from Patio World, north of Fargo. The new lion is much heavier and much better secured in place.
As this is an elementary school restrict your visits to after school hours or non-school days.
