Moncreiffe Hill is a wooded height running west to east, and the continuation of a long ridge that runs south of the city of Perth, eventually petering out between the River Tay to the north and River Earn to the south. The hill was the site of two Pictish hill forts, one on Moredun Top, the highest point of the hill at 223 metres, and the other a few hundred yards to the west on what is generally referred to as Moncreiffe Hill, despite being lower at 185 metres.

The pillar was placed on the lower summit and despite the surrounding woodland, has excellent views, especially southwards over the valley of the River Earn to the Ochil Hills. The M90 motorway runs close by underneath the steep and rocky south-western flank. The pillar is in good condition and has recently been painted white. The hill itself has been taken over by the Woodland Trust and has walking trails all over from both sides of the hill.

STEEPNESS: A steady climb from the north, but much steeper from the south where the slope is more pronounced.

TERRAIN: Good walking trails carved through the woodland.

ACCESSIBILITY: The hill can be accessed from two car parks on either side of the hill on the minor road that loops around the hill. The Tay Car Park is to the north and is around three-quarters of a mile from the pillar. The Earn Car Park to the south is around a mile and a half.

NAVIGATION: Signs at both car parks give a map of the walking routes up the hill. The routes to Moncreiffe Hill are well signposted.

DANGER: The route from the south is steep and a series of wooden steps have been constructed.
