Die Konstitutionssäule ist dem Gedenken an die erste sächsische Verfassung von 1831 gewidmet und die einzige ihrer Art, die heute noch in Sachsen existiert. Die erste sächsische Verfassung vom 4. September 1831 machte den Weg für die Entwicklung in Sachsen im 19. Jahrhundert frei. Sie war Ausgangspunkt für Reformen auf allen Gebieten des bürgerlichen- und des Wirtschaftslebens und gab damit den Auftakt zur industriellen Entwicklung in Sachsen. In Zittau beschloß man, zur Erinnerung an dieses bedeutende Ereignis, ein Denkmal zu errichten. Die Mittel dafür wurden von den Bürgern der Stadt aufgebracht und die Säule wurde am Jahrestag der Verfassung 1833 feierlich geweiht.
Die Konstitutionssäule steht unter Denkmalschutz (Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Sachsen, Objekt Nr. 09270378).
The constitutional column is dedicated to the commemoration of the first Saxon constitution of 1831 and the only one of its kind that still exists in Saxony today. The first Saxon constitution of 4 September 1831 paved the way for Saxony's development in the 19th century. It was the starting point for reforms in all areas of civil and economic life and thus marked the beginning of industrial development in Saxony. In Zittau it was decided to erect a monument in memory of this important event. The money for this was raised by the citizens of the city and the column was solemnly consecrated on the anniversary of the constitution in 1833.
The constitutional column is under monument protection (Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Sachsen, object no. 09270378).
