"Built in bronze on a large stone base, this monument to the dead was inaugurated on November 1, 1923 by Raymond Poincarré.

It is the work of the sculptor Alix Marquet. In addition to the statue of Marquet, the monument to the dead consists of a monumental base by the architect Camuzat, terminals and chains. At the cardinal points of the base are the shields of the cities of Nevers, Cosne, Clamecy and Château-Chinon.

At the top, Marquet's group represents a wounded man who tramples on the German eagle. Beside him, a woman in mourning crowns laurels and bends to pose, on the grave of the dead for France, a crown of the memory.

DEATHS FOR FRANCE

A curiosity, however, deserves mention; the head of the eagle, on which our blessed hairy crowned by victory sets foot, bears a trace of weld around his neck.

Indeed, during the last war, the Germans (whose eagle symbolized the country), not seeing it under this eye, had cut off the agonizing head of the poor raptor.

It was a real miracle, after the end of the hostilities, to rediscover this plucked bronze head that was immediately committed to resubmit to the whole to restore a sense of the glorious monument. "
