Fremont Ave crosses Permanente creek in Los Altos, and there on the creek is a benchmark disk...

This wouldn't be unusual, except that the disk is blank!

yet, I know this is Santa Clara Valley Water District benchmark number 1016. How?

Because nearby on the bridge is a hurried inscription by some surveyor, in black sharpie...

I guess that's what happens when you're in a hurry...
