Eastham is at the south eastern end of the Wirral Peninsula and one of the oldest villages on the peninsula.
A ferry operated from a wharf nearby from the Middle Ages run by the monks from theAbbey of St. Werburgh.
By 1816 the ferry had became privately owned and steam powered paddle steamers were introduced. The owner of the ferry built this pub in 1846 to attract more visitors.
In later years competition from ferries further north that were linked to a railway caused the ferry to close in 1929.
