The Afternoon Garden was designed between 1926 and 1928 by landscape architect Fletcher Steele. The focus of the Afternoon Garden are the formal fountains. Four stone scalloped basins are symmetrically arranged amid an elaborate network of hedges. A nozzle in the center of each basin spouts water that falls back into the basins. In the center of the basins is an oval pond. The fountains are surrounded by benches and 17 carved, Venetian gondola poles, sculpture by renowned artist Frederick MacMonnies.
