According to legend, Maximilian of Bethune Duke of Sully, Minister
Henry IV, would have acquired a property in Saint-Martin-de-Ré in which the King would have regularly stayed. If a royal visit on
Re 19 and 20 July 1586, is attested by the accounts of the treasurer,
the toponyms that can be found on the island (Bois Henri IV, rue de Sully)
are above all the fruit of seductive oral transmissions but no
verified.
Dr. Kemmerer, doctor and historian of the island, has as his
habit, succumbed to legend, writing in the 1888 edition of
his History of the Isle of Ré: "The Court of Henri IV liked the
stay of the islands and the famous Minister possessing a large and a small
hotel which often had the honor of receiving Henry IV. These
hotels were located between rue du Baron de Chantal and rue de
Sully. The flight of steps is in the yard of a house
facing the north wall of the church.
The buildings represented here seem to correspond to those
from the top of rue de Sully, which you see today partially
in front of you, unless the artist has in turn embellished a reality
less prestigious
The artist Paul Natter (1867-1946), painter and owner of the
Vinatière in Saint-Martin-de-Ré a few meters from here was also
made famous in the city for memorable celebrations in the accent of
pageant that he knew how to organize.

Ré les 19 et 20 juillet 1586, est attestée par les comptes du trésorier,
les toponymes que l'on retrouve sur l'île (Bois Henri IV, rue de Sully)
sont avant tout le fruit de transmissions orales séduisantes mais non
vérifiées.
Le Dr Kemmerer, médecin et historien de l'île, a comme à son
habitude, succombé à la légende, écrivant dans l’édition de 1888 de
son Histoire de l'île de Ré : « La Cour d'Henri IV affectionnait le
séjour des îles et le célèbre Ministre possédant un grand et un petit
hôtel qui eurent assez souvent l'honneur de recevoir Henri IV. Ces
hôtels étaient situés entre la rue du Baron de Chantal et la rue de
Sully. Le perron d'honneur se trouve dans la cour d'une maison
faisant face au mur nord de l'église ».
Les bâtiments représentés ici semblent plutôt correspondre à ceux
du haut de la rue de Sully, que vous voyez aujourd'hui partiellement
devant vous, à moins que l'artiste n'ait à son tour enjolivé une réalité
moins prestigieuse
L'artiste Paul Natter (1867-1946), artiste peintre et propriétaire de la
Vinatière à Saint-Martin-de-Ré à quelques mètres d'ici s'était aussi
rendu célèbre dans la ville pour les fêtes mémorables à l’accent de
reconstitution historique qu'il savait organiser.
