La "coupole de cristal" fut évoquée, à Strasbourg, par des peintures en trompe-l'oeil représentant des plantes exotiques et des oiseaux évoluant au-dessus des voussures".
La ville en fit un bâtiment à vocation musicale, pour y accueillir le conservatoire de musique, ainsi on trouve des chutes d'ornements avec médaillons de musiciens entre les fenêtres. On peut y voir notamment Mendelssohn et Schumann. Sur le fronton de l'avant-corps central trône la figure allégorique de la musique.
L'orchestre municipal quitte la salle de la rue des Balayeurs et donne ses concerts dans la salle au premier étage inaugurée le 5 novembre 1877, salle qui contient 750 fauteuils, jusqu'en 1898, date à laquelle elle émigre quai Kellermann.
Le bâtiment abritait aussi le musée des beaux arts qui existait déjà à cet emplacement avant 1870 puisque de nombreuses oeuvres ont été détruites lors du bombardement de 1870. Le musée des beaux arts a déménagé au Palais des Rohan après 1890.
Les intérieurs renferment un escalier d'honneur néoclassique, et une grande salle de concert, et même d'exposition, beau spécimen d'architecture néogothique en métal."
