In loving memory of
Gertrude, their oldest child who fell asleep
Jany.24th 1882, Aged 12, Years.'

The 1881 National Census records that Gertrude was a 'Scholar' who was 12 years old. Gertrude was born in Liverpool in the UK. Her father, Horatio, was born in the Devon town of Teignmouth and was described as a Commercial Traveller in the timber trade and was 38 years old. Margaret Pearon, Gertrude's mother was born in Liverpool and was 31. Gertrude had two brothers, Arthur and Richard and two sisters, Edith and Dora (7 months old).
