The bank did well. It began in 1871 as the Sixth Ward Savings Bank of the City of Albany, becoming the Home Savings Bank the following year. By 1927, the bank had built the tallest building in the city of Albany. The Home Savings Bank Building is still the tallest private building in Albany.

Alongside 159 other buildings, the Home Savings Bank Building is a contributing property in the Downtown Albany Historic District. Two doors away, on the same block, the much older building at 23 North Pearl Street is also a contributing property. Built around 1854, 23 North Pearl was once home to Sherry's women's apparel (1920s-1950s).
