Up to 2,000 inmates at the same time - politically persecuted, prisoners of war, but also "normal" delinquents - were interned in Esterwegen between 1933 and 1945, in 20 unheated, narrow barracks. Of the dwellings, nothing is seen today, they were demolished and sold after the war.
A large, round stone foundation on the edge of the path. Here, according to the memorial staff, once stood a fountain - the guards should feel comfortable on the premises. Everything was done to make life as pleasant as possible for the staff on the premises. They could use gardens, a sports field and a swimming pool and they did not have to do without culture - in the multi-storey Kameradschaftshaus with cinema hall and stage, drama, films and music were performed.
