This Roman Catholic church was built in the 1860s. According to a marker on the church, the second Catholic parish church in all of New York was built on this same site in 1797.

In 1894, St Mary's Church became the first church in Albany to have electric lighting. In addition to being on the National Register of Historic Places, this building is a contributing property for the Downtown Albany Historic District.
