This is an interesting variant. It is common to see a short, thin tree trunk, sometimes with a lamb, for a child, and the short monument and lack of an emblem denotes youth and not organizational membership. Here, we have a monument that's about as wide as the typical Woodmen of the World tree trunk, but the height of a child's monument. Why a lamb was chosen isn't clear, as Mr. Carter lived over sixty years and raised a family. The inscription reads:

M.M. Carter
Apr. 8, 1861
Jan. 19, 1924

---

On the reverse is an epitaph, "A tender father and a faithful friend."
Was the inscription legible?: Yes
