"De bouw van de kerk en de toren begon in de 15e eeuw en was oorspronkelijk een kleine kruisvormige kerk die, na het verbreden van de zijbeuken van het schip, een kerkzaal werd. Het koor werd ook vergroot en portalen in laatgotische stijl toegevoegd.

In 1602, na een verwoestend vuur, was het dak van de kerk volledig verloren. De kerk kreeg toen een nieuw dak. Veel andere Nederlandse steden hebben ook nieuwe ramen geschonken met glas-in-loodramen.

In de kerk was er ook een Latijnse school en een Librije, gelegen boven de sacristie bij de zuidportaal. De boeken van Librije zijn sinds 1934 uitgeleend aan de Koninklijke Bibliotheek van Den Haag. De collectie bevat 158 titels in 107 delen. Dit zijn voornamelijk theologische werken in het Latijn; werken van kerkvaders, al dan niet gebaseerd op Erasmus-publicaties, maar ook op hervormingsschrijvers. Heinrich Bullinger, de opvolger van Huldrych Zwingli in Zürich, heeft de meeste titels. "
