The historic 16th Street Baptist Church, epicenter of the civil rights movement in Birmingham. In 1963 the church was the target of a Klan bombing that took the lives of four little girls, galvanizing the nation to support the Voting Rights Act of 1964.
This tall black granite memorial topped with a bronze medallion commemorates the 4 little girls who died on that horrible September day. The memorial reads as follows:
"[double-sided bronze medallion]

"Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you would Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God."
KJV 2 Corinthians 5:20
Be ye reconciled one to another."
A separate sculptural memorial to the girls is located across the street at Kelly Ingram Park, itself the site of much racially-inspired terror.
Another small memorial to these girls is located a few yards north of this monument, at the spot where the bomb was detonated.
