History of the First State Bank of Gladewater by Billy B. McLean (1948)

"About 1901 a general mercantile store was opened by L.J. Everett, a former telegraph operator for the Texas and Pacific Railway station in Gladewater.

The general mercantile business of L.J. Everett was expanded and included making loans to farmers for the financing of their crops, purchase of farm implements, and for farm improvements. These lending functions induced L.J. Everett to venture into the private banking business.

The Everett Banking Company was capitalized at twenty-five thousand dollars in 1911.

A petition was filed for a state bank charter, and on Jan. 10, 1935, the bank became a state-chartered bank. The name of the bank was changed from Everett Banking Company to The First State Bank of Gladewater, Texas. The bank became a stock corporation, but the stock ownership remained in the hands of the owner of the private bank.
