[FR] Le port de Luçon est à l'origine de la ville.
Établi sur l'un des ruisseaux descendus de la plaine calcaire vers le golfe des Piétons. Chaque ruisseau a généré une bourgade avec son port.
Au VIIème siècle, St Philbert, venu de Noirmoutier, fonde un monastère bénédictin sur le ruisseau de Luçon.
Au XIIIème siècle, pour obvier aux débordements de la rivière Vendée à Fontenay-le-Comte, le roi Philippe le Hardi (1270-1285) prescrit le creusement d'un canal (l'achenal le Roi) permettant de détourner les crues de la Vendée sur le ruisseau de Luçon, consacrant ainsi la primauté de celui-ci. Luçon bénéficie désormais d'un canal à double fonction :
hydrographique : il s'inscrit dans le réseau de drainage des marais.
commerciale : le port s'est établi au fond du canal, au contact de la ville.

Luçon now has a dual function channel:
Hydrographic: it is part of the swamp drainage network.
commercial: the port was established at the bottom of the canal, in contact with the city.
