Main belt asteroid 5816 Potsdam was discovered on January 11, 1989, 1989 by German astronomer Freimut Börngen and named after the Potsdam Observatory.

In 1992, the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam (founded in 1874) and the Berlin Observatory (founded in 1700) merged into the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics, a privately funded research institute.

The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics focuses primarely on cosmic magnetic fields on various scales and extra-galactic astrophysics, but it also operates the Einstein Tower, a sun observatory built in 1921.
