Site Location: On a small 10-acre pondless island at the mouth of the Kennebec River off Popham Beach.

Directions to this site: Bath, ME - Take cruise from Maine Maritime Museum to pass by this site.

Nearest City/Town: Popham Beach, ME

Purpose: Marked the east side entrance to the Kennebec River.

Active: Yes

Site established: 1821 by James Monroe

Built: 1821 - stone, poor construction, 1855 - Current lighthouse

Ht. Above Sea level: 52 ft

Tower: 20 ft Cylindrical

Tower Material: Brick - White

Keeper's Quarters: Demolished in 1963

Oil House: Demolished in 1963.

Fog Signal Tower: 2 Blasts Every 30 Seconds.

Bell Tower: 1869 - Destoyed by storms, but bell survived.

Lens: 5º Fresnel Lens 1963 - 250 mm Optic

Light Color: White

Best Seen From: By Boat Only or 2.3 mile view from Popham Beach.

Tour boats pass by this site.
This island is now a seabird refuge. Thus the visiting restrictions.
Nearby Popham was the first English settlement in the Northeast, established in 1607.
1820's - This site became a transfer station for steamer passengers travelling from Augusta to Bangor.
