Back in 1903 when the town was incorporated, it was named for Andrew Carnegie, the well known philanthropist, in the hopes that he would build one of his libraries in their town. Unfortunately, it was not one of the cities to receive his gift. But, the local public library still has the honor of being called Carnegie Public Library. It is located at 12 E. Main Street (Phone: 580-654-1980).

The library is located in a beautiful, two-story downtown brick building. The building has three bays on each level, with a gabled roof, and a faux metal shed roof on the facade. The ground floor bays have large display windows and clerestories, with the center bay having a double glass door with sidelights. The arched windows on the upper level are set in doubles in each bay, with 20-pane fixed units.

The library is open Monday to Thursday from 1:00 to 6:00 and on Friday from 11:00 to 4:00. It offers Wi-fi Internet connections with six available computers. It serves a community of about 1700 residents, and has approximately 11,000 books to lend. The library has on microfilm, every edition of the Carnegie Herald newspaper since its inception in 1903.
