"Port Dickinson Heritage
This community was originally called Carmansville in honor of an early settler, Joseph Carmen. Port Dickinson was incorporated as a village on January 22, 1876 (the vote was 38 yes, 2 no) and named in honor of United States Senator Daniel S. Dickinson. The village first became known as a prosperous port on the 97 mile long Chenango Canal, which ran between Binghamton and Utica from 1836-1877. Now a residential suburb of Binghamton, Port Dickinson is the only incorporated community within the Town of Dickinson. One of its famous architectural treasures, the Bevier-Wright House, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008."
