One of a dozen historical markers placed along Front Street by the
Coos History Museum highlight buildings and structures which once lined this once-bustling district until a devastating fire burned half the business district down in 1922. This marker lies next to a historic 300-yr-old tree display and reads:
BAY VIEW BREWERY / GUILDESHEIM'S 2nd HAND HIDE & JUNK STORE ca. 1891-1892ON JULY 22, 1922 A FIRE STARTED HERE AND SPREAD TO BOTH SIDES OF FRONT STREET. WITHIN HOURS, 25 BUSINESSES HAD BEEN COMPLETELY DESTROYED. |
What many don't know who visit Coos Bay (including myself) is that this town was once called Marshfield and held that name until 1944. The 'Great Fire of Marshfield' forced businesses to relocate and rebuild more inland to what is currently the downtown district. Front Street today is nothing but memories of a former wharf and bustling business district.
