"The original site of Douglasville was known for almost one hundred years as "Skint Chestnut." According to local history, on the summit of this ridge there once stood a large chestnut tree, which for years before white settlement was used by the Indians as a landmark. In order for the tree to be more conspicuous, the Indians skinned it from top to bottom. Hence, the early settlers referred to it as "Skint Chestnut."

"In 1873, a post office was established at the site of what was to become Douglasville, and in the 1880s, it was moved into the two-story brick building on the corner of Broad Street and Campbellton Street. It occupied a back corner of C. O. Dorsett's dry goods and millinery store." ~ NRHP Nomination Form

"In 1879, the Dorsett, Price & McElreath General Store and Cotton Warehouse opened. This two story building was one of the first permanent brick buildings in the commercial district. The business was sold to Samuel N. Dorsett, who was one of the first merchants in Douglasville and co-owner of the Weekly Star newspaper. In the early 1900's J.M. Roberts operated a hardware store out of this building. Hoke Bearden operated a grocery store here in the 1940's. In 1997, Allen Bearden, son of Mrs. Edna Bearden, and Greg Peoples purchased the building and continue to occupy it today." ~ Douglasville DDA, Feb. 2017
