The Sun Life Assurance Building dates from 1898. This building was purchased by the Dominion Bank in 1944. Many changes were made to the building in 1949 and it served as a bank into the 1980s. As a corporation, the Dominion Bank ceased to exist in 1955 when it merged with the Bank of Toronto to become the
Toronto-Dominion Bank.
When the Dominion Bank refitted this building, the original façade was clad with limestone. The bank's coat of arms was added to the corner. The dome atop the roof was removed, as was the sculpture of Mercury that was fitted atop the dome. That sculpture of Mercury survives across town and is itself a waymark: WMD459.
In the description of that waymark, architect Barry Padolsky suggests that the Sun Life building was long since demolished. The building was significantly altered, yes; demolished, no.
In 2018, the building is home to jewellers. The boarded-up space for the old night deposit box can still be seen on the wall along Bank Street.
