Above the Adam's Gate in the Bamberg Cathedral is the Papal Seal of Pope Francis, indicating that the cathedral had been granted the title of Basilica Minor.
The cathedral was dedicate a Basilica Minor in 1923 by Pope Pius XI, who pointed out that the cathedral is different from any other cathedral in Germany as it is the only German church serving as the grave site of a pope. Pope Clement II was buried here in 1047.
All Basilica Minor churches display the papal seal of the current pope, which, since 2013, is the seal of Pope Francis.
