The Bamberg Cathedral, officially the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. George, celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 2012.
The cathedral was dedicated on May 4, 1012. Its founder, Henry II, was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1014.
There are nine cathedrals in Germany and Italy directly linked to Holy Roman Emperors - these churches are dedicated as Imperial Cathedrals (Kaiserdom in German).
The dedication of the cathedral was also the foundation of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bamberg. The cathedral has been the seat of the Bamberg Archbishop ever since - by now for more than a thousand years!

The cathedral was originally built in Romanesque style. After two fires in 1081 and 1185 destroyed huge parts of the original building, the entire northern part was rebuilt. This offers the unique combination of the southern part (in the picture left) being built in the rather simple Romanesque style and the northern part (in the picture right) being finished in the much more filigree Gothic style.

The cathedral contains the marble tomb of Henry II and his wife Cunigunda. Both were canonized and are Saints in Catholic Faith.
Another impressive piece of art is the Bamberg Horseman. We will issue separate waymarks for these sights.
