In a 2012 interview with Smithsonian magazine, Portland native and Simpson creator Matt Groening finally said as much, that Springfield, Oregon, was the city referenced in the TV animated comedy.
Unveiled on August 25, 2014, this 15-foot-by-30-foot mural is painted on the 5th Street wall of the Emerald Art Center, right around the corner from the City Hall of Springfield, Oregon. It features Homer relaxing in a hammock strung between two Douglas Fir trees, while drinking a Duff beer. Homer's blue-haired wife, Marge, can be seen at the left, painting a picture of Homer in the hammock, although her view shows Homer shirtless and buff, while drinking a glass of wine. Homer's three children, Bart, Lisa and Maggie can be seen in the mural. The word Springfield can be seen on the hillside in the distance.

Pictures of the mural can be found at their website, here, here and here.
Actress Yeardley Smith, voice of Lisa Simpson, helped dedicate and unveil the mural. Videos of mural creation and mural unveiling are available on YouTube.
NOTE:
Homer's driver's license says he lives at 742 Evergreen Terrace, but there is no such street in Springfield, Oregon.
