" As Owego grew, newer two and three story buildings were built in the downtown area. As a result the old hand pumping equipment was not adequate to pump water high enough to reach the upper floors of these buildings. A direct result of not having adequate equipment was a large conflagration now known as “The Great Fire of Owego.” "

"The greatest disaster in Owego's history came September 27, 1849, when fire destroyed the entire business section 104 buildings exclusive of barns, with a loss of $300,000, as figured in those days of low valuations. The blaze started in the hall of the Sons of Temperance, over the store of James and Wm. A. Ely on the south side of Front Street. Only three stores were left in the business section, "
