With his studies in economics and society, German philosopher Friedrich Engels (1818–1883) helped laying the groundwork to the modern theories of socialism.
Main belt astoroid 1999 EK3 was discovered in 1999 by Matteo M. M. Santangelo at the Osservatorio Astronomico di Monte Agliale in Italy and was named after the philosopher.
The original location was Berlin's Marx-Engels Forum, one of the few places on earth where one can still see a larger than life statue of the founders of Communism. THe statue was created in 1986 by sculptor Ludwig Engelhardt.
In 2019, the monument was moved to a new location.
