These seven villages are known collectively as the Amana Colonies, a religious communal society that came to Iowa from Germany in 1855. The villages were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Today this area is a popular tourist attraction and the Amana General Store is one of the most visited buildings. The sign outside tells more of its history.
“The sandstone and frame building was erected in 1856 as a general store and a second floor residence. In 1890, the brick addition was erected. The Amana Society Main Office (Corporate Headquarters) was located in the frame portion of the building from 1932 to 1973. Amana Society, Amana, IA”
