This 26,000 acre historic district includes the seven Amana villages: Amana, Middle Amana, South Amana, West Amana, East Amana, High Amana, and Homestead. These seven villages are known collectively as the Amana Colonies, founded by a religious communal society that came to Iowa from Germany in 1855. Known as the Community of True Inspiration, they based their lives on their religious beliefs and maintained self-sufficient communal living until the 1930’s. The artistry and craftsmanship that helped them sustain their communities for 80 years now attract large numbers of tourists looking for quality goods and tasty German home cooking. The villages were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.
