This marker to the
10th Ohio Volunteer Infantry is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The regiment was also known as the "Montgomery Regiment," and the "Bloody Tenth". The 10th Ohio Infantry was predominantly recruited from Irish Americans, but had two companies consisting of German Americans.

The 10th, Regiment was organized it Camp Dennison, Ohio, in June 1861, by Colonel, afterward General William H. Lytle. Was commanded at Chickamauga by Lt. Col. William M. Ward and was on duty at general head-quarters, Army of the Cumberland till the right wing of the Army was broken and driven back, after which in cooperation with General Davis and others it performed valuable services along the Crawfish Springs Road till the fighting ended. Occupied this position up to about 11:00 A.M. September 20, 1863.

Short Significance Description:

The marker contributes to the national significance of the park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description
6' x 6' x 13' monument has double-step rock-faced base, inscribed shaft with rock-faced quoins, and castellated crown. At very top is stone sculpture of a flag-draped drum.
Long Physical Description
This monument has been moved twice. First in 1966, in advance of a highway project that never happened, the monument was moved 57 feet. Then in 2002, the monument was returned to its original location.
