The 17th Ohio Monument is located on Poe Rd (one way), near tour stop 3, Chickamauga National Battlefield.
This monument is dedicated to
17th Ohio Infantry Regiment in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863.

Sept. 20th, was in the first line of battle in this position until about 12:00 M. when Gen’l. Wood's Division vacated the line on its right. Then being assailed in front and on its right flank was driven beyond the range of hills west of here and became separated from the left of the Army. Later in the day Lieut. Col. Ward was wounded. The command thereafter devolved on Major Butterfield. The detachment of the regiment rallied on Snodgrass hill and fought till the Army retired at night. Loss, killed 16: wounded 114: captured or missing 21: total 151.
Description: A rectangular, rough-edged commemorative marker with a curved relief of a Civil War soldier. He wears a uniform and cap and faces to the right, kneeling on his proper right knee and holding his rifle on his proper right side with both hands. Carved laurel and oak leaves adorn the top arches above the relief. The marker is topped with a rough-edged cap with a medallion of the State of Ohio seal in the center. Above the medallion is an acorn. The marker is set upon a rectangular, rock-faced base.

17th Ohio Infantry
Three-months regiment
The 17th Ohio Infantry organized at Lancaster, Ohio and mustered in August 30, 1861 under Colonel John M. Connell in response to President Lincoln's call for 75,000 volunteers. The regiment moved to Benwood, Virginia, then to Parkersburg, Virginia, April 20–23. The regiment was attached to Rosecrans' Brigade, Western Virginia, to July 1861. 2nd Brigade, Army of Occupation, Western Virginia, to August 1861.
The regiment performed railroad guard duty and operated against guerrillas in Jackson County, Virginia until July. (2 companies were assigned garrison duty in Ravenswood, Virginia until July 10.) The 17th Ohio Infantry skirmished with rebels at Glenville July 7 and participated in the Western Virginia Campaign July 7–17. The regiment subsequently concentrated at Buckhannon and then participated in the expedition to Button July 15–20. The remainder of its duty was at Button until August 3, then left Virginia for Zanesville, Ohio, August 3.
Three-years regiment
The 17th Ohio Infantry was reorganized at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, Ohio and mustered in for three years service on August 30, 1861 under the command of Colonel John M. Connell.
The regiment was attached to 1st Brigade, Army of the Ohio, November to December 1861. 1st Brigade, 1st Division, Army of the Ohio, to September 1862. 1st Brigade, 1st Division, III Corps, Army of the Ohio, to November 1862. 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, Center, XIV Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to January 1863. 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, XIV Corps, Army of the Cumberland and Army of Georgia, to July 1865.
The 17th Ohio Infantry mustered out of service at Louisville, Kentucky on July 16, 1865.

Short Physical Description
8' x 5' x 9'6" high, monument consists of three rectangular blocks on a rock-faced base. Lowest block is inscribed, middle block has relief carving of kneeling soldier, and top has carved acorn and bronze state seal.
Long Physical Description
Monument is located within the Chickamauga Battlefield along Poe Road, map site #138.
