This brick building is thought to have been built around 1861 and is likely the second two-story brick building erected in Jacksonville (after the McCully Building). In it's early history as a general merchandise store, with living space above, the building was run by Wade, Morgan & Company and by Benjamin Drew. Today it houses a merchantile specializing in gourmet foods. The west side of the building features "ghost signs" advertising "Wendt's Dairy" and tobacco brands. For many years there were no structures on the west side, allowing a full view of the signs. But more recent construction (the building featuring the "Beekman's Express" signage) resulted in blocking the view of most of the west wall. This was allowed in part because the early history of the building including similar false-front wood-frame buildings in those locations.
