This historical marker hangs in front of the City Meat Market building on historic W Miner St. There are numerous older buildings along Miner Street that contain historical markers that relate the history of each building, a few mentioning Yreka's great fire of 1871. This historic building's marker reads:

Wetzel Building
319 W. Miner St.

The City Meat Market was owned and operated by various individuals since its first owner, Charles Herzog, put up the building in 1854. Through the years innovations such as a horsepower apparatus to run the sausage machine (1867), lowered prices to reduce competition (1875), screens on the doors to keep flies out (1892), and the addition of an ice plant in 1897 helped to keep the business thriving and modern. The great fire of 1871 did not destroy the market, but the explosion of a coal oil lamp ignited a blaze in 1899 that caused major damage. Owners Wurster and Metzger hired traveling artist A. Cedros in 1911 to paint wall murals to enhance the interior. These paintings exist today even though the City Meat Market closed its doors to the public in 1973.

Yreka has a few websites devoted to preserving its rich history. Siskiyouhistory.org is a good place to start and breaks up the town's history into groups of years. Yrekapreservation.org contains some nice pictures of original homes and commercial buildings from yesteryear. Finally, Yrekahistory.blogspot.com is a good blog website which contains great stories and events of Yreka's past and all their articles have been archived.

Cause of Fire:
On July 4th, 1871, disaster struck — a fire burned down a good portion of the town, including most of the business district (the cause was most likely from fireworks). But the town came together and rebuilt, stronger (and more fire-proof) than before.
