On the morning of December 6th, 1908, a fire erupted in an upper floor varnish shop of the Wormwith Piano factory. The fire destroyed the building taking with it more than a dozen completed pianos ready to be shipped, dozens of others partially built and the tools of more than 60 employees. Only the walls withstood the fire. The city gave the firm a $10,000 interest free loan to rebuild. Piano making endured for another 31 years at this location.
Since the end of piano making this location was used by the Armed Forces, and the S&R department store which closed in 2009 after 50 years of serving the Kingston downtown. The location has been completely renovated and is now home to Milestones Grill & Bar, TD Waterhouse, Marble Slab Creamery, Cunningham Swan Carty Little & Bonham LLP, Urban Paws, HDR Architecture Associates Inc., Delcan Corporation Matson, Driscoll & Damico Ltd., and Ivemey & Hogeboom, Chartered Accountants.
