Historic
Jacksonville Cemetery is located on a hill overlooking the city. Jacksonville was a gold rush town dating to the 1850s and many homes and commercial buildings have survived to become part of the
Jacksonville Historic District, including this cemetery.
Jacksonville is also a tourist destination, as thousands of visitors arrive annually to attend the Britt Festival, a summer music and performing arts festival, and to experience history by touring the historic downtown.
The cemetery is organized into the following "sections": City, Catholic, Jewish, Masonic, Odd Fellows, Red Men (Improved and Independent Orders).
Among the notable burials here are Peter Britt (pioneer and photographer for whom the festival is named) and Cornelius C. Beekman and family (a banker and civic leader).
