The Forks Fire started September 20, 1951, traveled 18 miles in 6 hours and burned over 30,000 acres of timber. Luckily the Calawah River acted as a firebreak to halt the fires southward progress or much more damage could have resulted. Burned wood was salvaged from the burn area for five years following the fire and new methods were developed that allowed charred wood to be salvaged and used in making paper.
