Southern Oregon Gas Company Building - Medford Downtown Historic District - Medford, Oregon - NRHP Historic Districts - Contributing Buildings on Waymarking.com

Built in 1936, the Southern Oregon Gas Company Building was one of the first commercial building built in Medford after the onset of the Great Depression. It was built on property the previously served as the location of the First Presbyterian Church. Renovation that began in the mid-1970s resulted in changes that limited the historic integrity of the building and when nomination of the Medford Downtown Historic District was approved in 1998, this building was declared "Historic Non-Contributing."

In 2003 the Medford Urban Renewal Agency provided grant funding toward restoration of the building to its original appearance. The unappealing tile and stucco paneling that had been added in the 1970s was removed to reveal the original architectural details. The City of Medford Historic Commission presented a historic preservation award to acknowledge these efforts as the structure now adds to the historic character of the downtown district.

Today the restored Southern Oregon Gas Company Building is home to Mellelo Coffee Roasters downtown cafe.
