This Italianate style brick structure was built in 1856, with the Bella Union saloon as the original occupant. In 1874, a fire gutted the building and after a rebuilding effort the John A. Boyer General Store began operations. Into at least the 1890s the building continued to serve as a general store. In 1988, a new Bella Union Restaurant & Saloon opened, occupying this building and the adjacent structure built in 1970 by Universal Studios for the filming of the Great Northfield Minnesota Raid.
