This mermaid is located just a few steps from a statue of Benito Juarez. See (visit link)

The mermaid is set on a small rocky island just off the beach...and attached to the malecon by a small pedestrian bridge. It depicts a sitting mermaid, nude to her waist...and scales below the waist. Her expression and arm gestures suggests that she is being surprisedd by something in the near distance. Unfortunately there is no sign indicating the title, artist or date.

The piece is just a short walk north from this other mermaid sculpture. (visit link)

Mermaids have a wide representation in myth and folklore...with the first known mentions in ancient Syria around 1000 BC. See the Wikipedia article on mermaids at (visit link)
