This church, right on the heart of Lisbon, was partially destroyed by a fire during the night of the 13th August 1959. The fact that it was a landmark in the center of Lisbon and the risk of fire spreading to contiguous buildings caused a huge mobilization. However, even with around 300 firemen involved in the operations, the fire completely destroyed the inside of the church.
But the tragic events of that night didn't only caused material damages. Two firemen, Francisco Silva Gomes and João Francisco died due to the collapse of part of the roof, which caused also injuries in 22 other firemen.
After a long time, the church reopened in 1994, but some marks of the fire are still visible, like the cracks on the columns.
