This benchmark is located near the summit of Guard Hill.

Directions to the benchmark are as follows:
Park at the Guard Hill parking area on West Patent Road in Bedford, NY. Follow the yellow blazed trail to the summit of Guard Hill. There is a clearing near the summit for a pump house. Across the access road from the pump house is the highest point on the hill. This benchmark is located about 60 feet NNW of the highest point on the hill.

This is Reference Mark No. 1 for the benchmark VAN

Reference Mark No. 1 is a standard disk stamped VAN WCCS 1937 NO 1 1966, cemented in a drilled hole in outcropping bedrock which projects 6 inches above the ground on the southwest side and 2 feet on the northeast side. It is 59 feet north-northeast of the center of the base for the flagpole, 25.5 feet southwest of a 30-inch oak tree and set on the northeast slope of hill about 4 feet lower than the benchmark VAN.
